Slovenia at the end of the Second World War. Two children from rival camps and a US soldier embark on a search for a peaceful sanctuary. This melodrama interprets the Yugoslavian partisan film genre not as heroic war film but as a moving anti-war film. In 1957, its lead actor John Kitzmiller became the first African-American actor to win a Best Actor Award at Cannes. (bb)
